Our house rule growing up was Christmas did not start until Santa was seen on the Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade. My favorite Christmas song is “Have yourself a merry little Christmas” and the reason is we always decorated the house Thanksgiving weekend. My father passed away a week before Thanksgiving 11 years ago. One day my mom and sister were driving in the car shortly after my father passed away, and a Christmas song came on. My sister was going to turn it off because it was not Thanksgiving day yet, and my mom told her that it was ok to listen to it. The song was Have yourself a merry little Christmas. My parents bought a gold star for the top of the tree their first Christmas together and that was always the tree topper. My mom bought a new tree the year my father passed away, it was taller than her previous tree. Thanksgiving weekend she was decorating listening to Christmas music, the song that came on as soon as she turned on the radio was Have yourself a merry little Christmas. She waited a couple days to put the star on the tree because she needed a step ladder, and when she did, she turned on the radio and Have yourself a merry little Christmas was playing, and it was at the part of the song that says hang a shining star upon the highest bough, right when she was hanging the star. That year she bought all of us kids a gold star ornament for Christmas. She did not want to buy us a gold star tree topper because she said that the tree topper should be an individual choice and we were all adults and had our own tree toppers. She also bought all of us an angel ornament with the footprints in the sand quote on it. She believes that song was my dad’s way of telling her to make that first Christmas without him merry for her and all of us kids, so she did.
